Victory for protesters as mobile phone mast plan is rejected by council

RESIDENTS protesting over plans to site a mobile phone mast in Leftwich - close to where two girls died of leukaemia - are celebrating after it was refused by planning chiefs.

Some 130 residents signed a petition against the mast, which was turned down on strong grounds of a health risk.

MP Mike Hall also sent a letter voicing his protest over the 12-metre proposed Vodafone mast that was to have been sited on Old Hall Road.

Mr Hall said: "The issue has been complicated with the two girls - there are concerns about the serious public health matters.

"People are concerned about this in general but there is clearly a concern about public health in relation to the two incidences of leukaemia in the past 12 months.

"I wrote a strong letter of objection to the planning department at Vale Royal Borough Council and made my representations to the local council."

Other objections included it being in close proximity to a green where children play, it would be dangerous and unsightly, it would reduce visibility on the junction and would be detrimental to highway safety.

The application had originally been recommended for approval but had been brought to planning chiefs' attention by Clr Mary Bowhay-Merrit after complaints by residents.
