A RESIDENT who lives opposite Muirfield Close has described parts of an old gas works, rubbish and rubble being dumped at the site before the houses were built. The 85-year-old, who does not wish to be named, has lived on Old Hall Road for more than 48 years. He said the former Northwich Urban District council had built the houses on the main Leftwich estate but did not build on a huge field opposite the estate which later became Muirfield Close. He said: "For some reason they didn't build on this. "It was three feet below the road level and it was always wet. The resident said that contractors used to come and dump stuff there. He said: "People used to come and dump rubbish and things like sofas. It was fly tipping. "Part of the old Crum Hill gas works in Northwich and part of the old police station and bricks and rubble from New Street were dumped." He said the field was then filled in the late 60s and was left. Before they built on the land tests were carried out. The resident added: "I thought it was very strange building on this land and even more so when they built the old people's home. "There was no end of rubbish underneath. You just don't know what was in it and what has been released into the atmosphere."
