Batsmen show the way to top

DAVENHAM edged closer to the Division One summit after their unfamiliar line up cruised to a four-wicket win at Wilmslow.

Five second team players were promoted to the senior ranks and they staked a claim for a promotion after helping their teammates chase a commanding total.

Davenham's bowling attack had started spectacularly with two Wilmslow batsman back inside the pavilion by the end of the second over.

They toiled with scant reward thereafter though, as the home side piled on the runs with Fulker (171) and Hutchinson (66no) taking their team to 266 by the close of their innings.

David Ashley (2-61) claimed both wickets.

In reply Davenham lost Tom Screen and Paul Jackson before Ashley came to the crease with the score on 37.

He shared a 64-run stand with opener Louis Bentley (65) to get his side's run chase back on track.

Second team vice captain Mark Spalding (60) joined Ashley (58) to take the score to 158, when the Davenham dangerman was caught with his side still needing 109 runs from 16 overs.

Spalding and Phil Sharples (34) took them closer to their target and it was left to teenager Chris Hornby (22no) to make sure they did not miss out, reaching 268-6 with three overs to spare.

The win leaves Davenham in fourth place in the table, just four points adrift of Cholmondeley ahead of them.

They will hope to further boost their challenge when they host Prestbury at Butchers Stile at the weekend.
